On-line social networking is Asynchronous allowing you to do your networking when it is convenient to you.

I recently met a networker that stated that she didn’t have time to do on-line networking and that her limited event networking was enough. She was simply pooped at the end of the day. She asked how people find the time and energy to do on-line networking like LinkedIn. Well, the beauty of this type of networking is that it is Asynchronous. Wow, that’s a big word. Let me explain.

With an event (or a phone call) you have a Synchronous situation. This means that you must both be in the same place (or on the phone) at the same exact time to communicate. In a world where everyone is so busy, where there are 3 events on the same night and where we get voice mail 5 times as often as a real person, it is getting even harder to do Synchronous networking.

On-line networking, being Asynchronous, means that you can do your networking when it is most convenient for you. This is much like E-Mail. Two users do not need to be on E-Mail at the same time for it to work. This means that you can do it at your leisure, perhaps while watching TV. It lets you “get your wind” back and relax a bit before diving in. Personally, I always have the TV on at home when I do my on-line networking. It relaxes me and makes it seem like I am getting 2 things done at once. Give it a try.
